Process of Bailing Out Inmates

Within 24 hours, all inmates are interviewed for an Own Recognizance release by Pre Trial Services. If granted, the inmate will be released without the need for bail. If the release is not granted, bail will be set for the inmate or the inmate will be held without bail until seen by the court.

People can post bail in person by going either to the Washoe County Jail cashier or to the courthouse where the case is being handled.

If you are posting bail, take note of the following guidelines. The courts will accept only:

  1. U.S. currency
  2. Certified or cashier’s checks drawn on U.S. banks
  3. Postal money orders (with the amount typed or stamped)
  4. Bonds posted by accepted bail agents (except cash-only bails and fines)

Money orders, certified and cashier’s checks should be made payable to the court hearing the case.

Once bail is posted, the release procedure takes up to eight hours.

Alternatively, you can also post bail online via GovPayNow.com. You will need the following information to post bail:

  • Court of Jurisdiction
  • Payment Amount
  • Name of Arrestee/Defendant for whom payment is being made
  • Arrestee/Defendant’s Date of Birth
  • Arrestee/Defendant’s Booking Number
